What is Google My Business?

Google My Business is a free business listing account offered by Google for businesses. The service allows you to create a business profile for your business which then helps you connect and engage with customers across the Google Search and Maps platforms.

The service provides a number of tools to help businesses grow and promote their business online. Among these, include marketing kits, analytics data, plus the ability to easily connect with customers who engage with your listing.

If you’re already using the service, great. But if you’re not, now is as good a time as ever to jump on board. What else can you do with an account, you ask? Well, plenty, as a matter of fact.

Here is what to know.

What can I do with a Google My Business account?

With a Google My Business account, you are able to showcase a number of different pieces of information about your business. From location, to phone number, business hours, and website details, this is all the type of information that may display on your Google listing.

In addition to your basic contact information, you are also able to add photos of your business, share posts about updates, promotions, or specials, add products and services – anything that is important to communicate about your business. Not to mention, you can also manage all your Google Reviews right from your account dashboard.

Here’s what a Google Business listing looks like in search results. Chances are you may have seen something like before when browsing the web. From a desktop or laptop screen, the listing appears on the right-hand side of the screen next to the rest of the search results when searching for a particular business.

With a Google My Business account, you are also able to view insights and analytics about how customers interact with your business listing. This may include information such as:

  • The number of people who have seen your business listing on Google Search and Maps;
  • What search terms people typed in to find your business listing;
  • How many views your photos have received;
  • The number of phone calls your business has received directly from your business listing;
  • The number of people who have visited your website from your listing;
  • Direction requests;
  • Among many other insightful analytics about your business listing.

Note: You can use Google My Business whether your business has a physical location or not. This is particularly useful if your business is a home-based or service-related business where customers do not physically visit a storefront.

Okay, so that’s what you can do with the platform. But, why do you need it? Well, glad you asked.

Why do I need a Google My Business account?

Perhaps the number one reason for needing a Google My Business account is that your business listing is generally the very first thing that people will see when searching for your business on Google, even before ever visiting your website. Yes, you read that correctly. The very first thing.

And because of this simple fact, you want to be sure that what people see is informative, enticing, and current. And if your business has some Google Reviews, they will also see the star rating of your business on your listing.

Star ratings range from one to five stars and your overall star rating is based on the average rating of your business based on reviews that people have left for your business.

You’ve probably seen reviews on Google before. They look like this.

But if this isn’t reason enough, having a Google My Business listing is also a great way to help keep customers up to date and current about your business.

Since much of the contact information about your business, including hours of operation, will show on your listing, it’s a great opportunity to add this information to your listing and keep it up to date.

GMB and Local SEO

Another biggie as to why you need a Google My Business account is local SEO. That’s right. Having a Google business listing can actually help improve how well your business shows on local search results.

If you run a locally based business, then this even more important to attracting local customers in your area and your overall bottom line.

Need I say more? Okay, maybe just a little more.

In addition, having an overall positive star rating for your business from Google Reviews that customers leave for your business can help improve credibility and trust among potential new customers. It’s no question that people trust reviews.

Let’s face it. Seeing is believing. Ensuring potential customers like what they see, now that’s where the money is.

Taking the time to optimize your listing on Google is a task that is completely worth it and won’t go unnoticed. Best of all, the steps to optimize you profile are relatively simple and take but just a few minutes time.

With that being said, here are a few things you can do to improve the visibility of your Google listing on Search and Maps.

The primary goal here is to make sure that your listing is accurate, complete, and engaging in nature. Business Profiles that adhere to these best practices generally tend to be more visible on Google and thus, experience higher customer engagement as a result.

Ready for the tips? Here they are.

1 – Fill out all your business information completely

Simply entering all the information that you can about your business when filling out your profile is one of the simplest steps you can do to improve the visibility for your listing on Google Search and Maps. So, be sure to fill out all fields in their entirety.

You want to make sure that people can get all the information they can about your business up front. This includes information about what your business does, where it’s located, when it’s open, and how they can contact your business. When businesses profiles are thoroughly filled out on Google, this also helps your business show up for the right searches that people may perform.

Among the key pieces of business information you should include on your Google listing are:

And if you your business has multiple locations, you will want to be sure to verify all the locations for your business.

Businesses that are verified on Google are much more likely to show up in better placement on Google Maps and Search versus businesses that are not. Not to mention, having your business verified on Google is necessary in order for the updates you make to your business listing to show on Google – such as updates to hours, contact information, posts, and more.

So, be sure not to skip this step. It’s one of the more important steps you can take to enhance the overall optimization of your profile.

Yes, this one may seem like a no-brainer as well. But, have you ever tried calling a business or visiting their location only to find that they were closed, even though their hours online clearly said they were open? I mean, how frustrating was that?

This is why keeping accurate business hours for your business is so important. Not only does it let customers know when your business is actually open, but it gives them confidence knowing that your business can be reached or visited during those times.

In addition, updating your hours for special occasions such as holidays and events will keep your customers better informed if you ever need to close for a day or two. No more guessing on the part of your customers. Nope – only the assurance knowing that your business is open and available on the days and times that your listing says it is.

4 – Manage and respond to your Google Reviews

Did you know that your business listing is also where customers can leave reviews for your business? These are known as Google Reviews, and they are a key component for all Google My Business listings.

With Google Reviews, customers can leave not only a star rating for your business, but can also leave a written review based on the experience they have had with your business. Star ratings range from one to five stars with one star being the worst experience and five stars being the best.

So, it goes without saying, this is definitely something worth paying attention to.

Within your Google My Business dashboard is where you can review and respond to all reviews your business receives. Doing so is a best practice and can certainly help make your business seem more personable and transparent. Without question, these are qualities that businesses of all types can benefit from as it relates to customer relationship management.

All Google Reviews left for your business and their responses can be viewed publicly. And you can be certain that when people are researching your business, they are reading these reviews.

So, take the few minutes to thank customers for their positive reviews and respond professionally to any negative reviews your business receives. Doing so will show potential customers that you genuinely care about all feedback that your business receives, no matter what.

5 – Add photos or videos to your Business Profile

Have you ever thought about checking out a new restaurant or store and wanted to see what it looks like on the inside? Or maybe you just wanted to check out some photos of the dishes they offer beforehand. Well, that’s exactly what you’re able to provide customers with when you add photos or videos to your Google Business profile.

Adding photos or videos is a great way to show potential customers all that your business has to offer in a visual and enticing way. Doing so can spark their interest further and help them to know more about what to expect when visiting your business. This applies to whether you run a storefront, a restaurant, an office, or any other type of business really.

When adding photos with Google My Business, it’s a good practice to add a variety of photo types. You can add photos of the exterior and interior of your building, team photos, and photos of the products that your business offers.

Not to mention, business profiles with a variety of multiple photos of their business tend to receive more engagement on their listings overall. You can even see how many views your photos receive over time. Pretty neat, huh?

Have a cool team photo? Share it. Proud of the way your store looks in a particular snapshot? Post it.

There’s no limit to the photos you can share that highlight and show off your business to the world. So, start adding some.

Here is an example of how posts can show up on a listing itself. People can scroll through a carousel if you have multiple posts and can click on the post itself to read more if your post is lengthy or has a lot of information to share. You can also add a link too if you want, among several other call-to-action button options.
