If you need to connect your website to your GoDaddy domain, the instructions are fairly straightforward if your website is also hosted with GoDaddy.

If so, you can use follow the instructions in this this video to connect your GoDaddy domain to your website.

However, if your website is hosted somewhere other than GoDaddy, then you will need make edits to the DNS records for your domain name in order to connect your domain to your website.

Your DNS records can be found and edited within the DNS settings for your domain.

How to connect a custom GoDaddy domain to your website

Generally, there are a total of 3 records that need to be updated to your GoDaddy domain if your website is hosted somewhere other than GoDaddy. These three DNS records include:

  1. First A record
  2. Second A record
  3. A CNAME record

Before you update the DNS records for your GoDaddy domain to connect to your externally hosted website, you will first need to find out from your current hosting provider what these DNS records should be. That’s right. This information will need to be provided by them.

With that in mind, here are the steps to connect your website to a custom GoDaddy domain.

Time needed: 15 minutes

Connecting a custom GoDaddy domain

  1. Gather required DNS records from current hosting provider

    Start by contacting your hosting provider where your website is or will be hosted and request the DNS records for an external domain. This should include two (2) A records and one (1) CNAME record. They should be able to email this information to you.

  2. Sign into your GoDaddy account

    Alternatively, you can also sign directly into your Domain Portfolio.

  3. Select Domain Edit Options

    Select Domain Edit Options next to the domain you want to connect, and then select Edit DNS.

  4. Select the DNS records that require updates

    Choose the checkboxes next to the DNS records that need to be updated and then select Edit. These will be for the two A records and one CNAME.

  5. Enter your DNS record details

    Enter the details for your two A records and CNAME. (Note: this information will need to be provided by the hosting provider where your website is, or will be hosted.)

  6. Confirm settings and save

    Lastly, select Save to confirm your edits. Alternatively, you may see the option to Save all records instead. Simply select the save option that is shown.

And that’s it. Congratulations! If you followed these steps, then you will have successfully connected your custom GoDaddy domain to your website.

Note: While most DNS updates take effect within an hour, it can take up to 48 hours for changes to fully take effect. So, it may take this long before your domain will go to your website.
