Domain Registration

Each GoDaddy domain name comes with everything you need to get online.

  • Domain Forwarding and Masking: Direct any domain name you own to your website. Anyone who types that domain name into their browser is taken directly to your website.
  • Domain Locking: Domain locking prevents accidental or intentional transfers of domain ownership and stops anyone from redirecting your nameservers.
  • Total DNS Control: Manage your domain nameserver (DNS) records and set your email, FTP, sub-domains and website location all from one control panel.
  • Change of Registration: Assign your domain name to someone else or change the contacts for your domain online anytime.
  • Status Alerts: Monitor the status of your domain and get instant alerts if there’s been a change.
  • Auto Renew Protection: No need to watch expiration dates to make sure you renew on time! Auto renew keeps your domains, hosting, website builders, and other products in your name and under your control.

GoDaddy Domains FAQ

What is a domain name?

A domain name is what people type into the Internet search bar to find a website. Websites, servers, or digital devices connected to the internet have IP addresses. IP addresses are typically long and difficult for people to remember so domain names resolve that problem. They’re shorter, catchier, and easier to remember.

Having your own domain name makes your business appear legitimate to people searching your business online. Domain names can help you build a website, create a professional email, and create a branded pay link to receive payments.

Using GoDaddy’s domain search tool, you can find a name perfect for your business and promote it easily.

How can I see if a domain is available?

Just type the domain name you want to use into the GoDaddy domain search bar and see if someone else owns it. If it’s taken, search your domain name using the WHOIS Lookup, or try the Domain Broker service where GoDaddy can negotiate the acquisition of the domain name from its current owner.

GoDaddy also offers a Domain Backorder service that allows you to purchase a backorder credit that allows you the chance to get the domain name you want when it goes to auction.

What is domain name registration?

Domain name registration is the process of finding a web address and signing up to use it. Registering it ensures it’s yours, but doesn’t mean you own the name. A domain name is yours for as long as you pay to keep it registered.

How do I go about buying a domain name?

First, decide what type of extension you want (i.e., .net, .biz, .org, or .com). Then you’ll choose your business name. Need help choosing a name? GoDaddy’s business name generator will help you find the right one.

If the domain name you want is already taken, we’ll let you know. We show you what names are available and provide suggestions for other names you might like. Once you pick a domain name, add it to your cart and check out!

Once you register for your domain name, it’s all yours! No-one else can use it.

How do I get a free domain name?

You may qualify for a free domain when you purchase an annual Web Hosting plan or any annual Managed WordPress plan through GoDaddy.

If you want the free domain name option, make sure to pick the annual term when you checkout. From there, you’ll use the search bar to pick the domain name you want and continue with checkout.

How do I pick a good domain name?

Picking a good domain name depends on what you do with it. Here are four factors to consider when choosing a domain name:

Your domain name should reflect your brand. Typically, it should be your business name. Doing so helps customers remember you.

Keep your domain name short. Shorter domain names make it easier to remember and identify you with.

–  Don’t include numbers or hyphens. Numbers and hyphens can be confiding for customers to remember to include when searching you up. If you do include numbers in your domain name, make sure to register both the number and the number spelled out so people looking you up can always find you.

Register more than one domain. Registering both common misspellings and other various domain extensions like: .org, .net, .info, and more ensures you’re keeping your domain safe since you’re thinking ahead and covering your bases.

How long does my domain registration last?

The length of your domain registration depends on the domain you purchase. Most domain name registrars allow customers to register domain names for up to 10 years at a time, but you can also register domains for one to three years depending on business needs.

How do I renew my domain name?

Extending your registration with GoDaddy is easy! You can either manually renew or set up an auto-renewal. Either way, each option ensures your domain name stays registered to you.
